Custom Foot Orthoses are prescribed using the PHITS 3D orthotic system, allowing us to design truly individualised orthoses based on how you move rather than how your feet appear in static posture. Prescription is informed by a comprehensive assessment that may include Sport & MSK evaluation, Run 3D Gait Analysis, plantar pressure analysis & strength testing. This data-led approach enables precise control over key design variables such as arch support, rearfoot control, forefoot accommodation & material stiffness, ensuring the orthoses complement your biomechanics, activity demands & footwear rather than applying generic correction.
PHITS orthoses are particularly effective for managing load-related conditions, where subtle changes in force distribution can significantly influence pain, tissue stress & movement efficiency. By refining how load is absorbed & transferred through the foot during walking & running, orthoses can reduce stress on vulnerable structures while preserving natural movement. Designs are tailored for both everyday use & sport, ensuring the level of support is appropriate for the demands placed on the foot during training, competition & daily activity.
Orthoses are never used in isolation at MH Sports Podiatry, but as part of a wider, integrated management strategy. This may include targeted rehabilitation, footwear modification & progressive load management to restore capacity & confidence in movement. Review & refinement are built into the process to ensure comfort, effectiveness & long-term benefit, supporting pain reduction, improved movement efficiency & a confident return to activity or sport.
Runners who experience recurring injuries such as plantar heel pain, Achilles tendinopathy, forefoot pain or stress-related injuries often benefit from PHITS custom foot orthoses. These issues are frequently linked to how load is distributed through the foot & lower limb during running rather than isolated tissue weakness. PHITS orthoses are designed using dynamic gait data, allowing precise adjustment of support and control to reduce excessive stress on vulnerable structures while maintaining efficient propulsion.
PHITS orthoses are well suited to active individuals who experience foot, ankle, knee or hip pain during daily activities, work or exercise. Conditions such as flat feet, high arches, joint instability or altered foot mechanics can lead to compensatory movement patterns & increased strain elsewhere in the body. By improving alignment & load distribution, PHITS orthoses help support more efficient movement, reduce pain & improve comfort during prolonged standing or activity.
Athletes training at higher volumes or intensities place significant repetitive load through the lower limbs. Even small biomechanical inefficiencies can accumulate & impact performance or recovery. PHITS orthoses allow fine-tuning of mechanical support to improve force transfer, stability & efficiency without over-restricting natural movement. This makes them particularly valuable for competitive runners & athletes seeking durability, consistency & performance optimisation.
PHITS custom foot orthoses are ideal for individuals who require long-term support that can adapt as their needs change. Whether due to growth, changes in activity level, rehabilitation progression or footwear transitions, PHITS designs can be reviewed & modified to remain effective over time. This adaptability ensures ongoing comfort & function, making them suitable for both developing athletes & adults managing chronic or evolving mechanical issues.
Do I need to be an athlete?
No. We help anyone who wants to recover from injury, move without pain & perform better in daily life or sport.
Do you assess suitability for running shoes? Yes, 3D gait analysis explores shoe categories including cushioned vs stability, carbon-plated racing models, minimalist footwear, providing objective data needed to make the right choices.
How long until I recover from pain or improve performance? Pain often improves within weeks when load drivers are addressed. Performance changes depend on your starting point & adherence. We will outline milestones & re-test dates.
Can I bring previous scans or reports?
Absolutely. They help us integrate your history & focus testing where it matters.
What is your cancellation policy? We require a minimum of 24 hours' notice for cancellation or rescheduling. Missed appointments or cancellations received with less than 24 hours' notice will incur the full consultation fee.
What should I bring? For any assessment, please bring your primary sports footwear, any relevant custom orthoses & shorts/clothing that allow clear viewing of your lower limb.
