Sports Podiatry

Focuses on the assessment and management of foot, ankle and lower-limb injuries related to sport, exercise and physical activity. The aim is to help individuals recover from injury, improve movement efficiency and support safe return to training and performance.

Biomechanics

Assesses how the body moves and how forces are distributed through the lower limbs during walking, running and activity. By analysing movement patterns, loading strategies and alignment, biomechanics helps identify factors that may contribute to pain, injury or reduced performance.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Podiatry

Focuses on the diagnosis and management of foot, ankle and lower-limb pain arising from joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. Treatment combines clinical assessment, rehabilitation and movement analysis to improve function, reduce pain and support long-term mobility.

At MH Sports Podiatry, our Sport & Musculoskeletal (MSK) Assessment is designed to identify not only where pain is occurring, but why it has developed and what factors may be limiting performance, movement efficiency and long-term resilience. Whether you are a runner managing a persistent injury, an athlete returning to sport or an active individual looking to improve function, we use a comprehensive, evidence-informed assessment process to evaluate the mechanical, strength and load-related factors that influence both injury and performance. By understanding how the foot, ankle, knee, hip and pelvis work together under load, we can identify the underlying contributors to pain, inefficient movement and reduced athletic capacity.

Our assessment combines detailed clinical examination with objective biomechanical and performance testing to provide a complete picture of how your body functions during walking, running and sport-specific movement. We assess joint mobility, tissue capacity, movement control, force production, balance and loading strategies to determine how forces are generated, transferred and absorbed throughout the lower limb. This allows us to move beyond symptom-based treatment and develop a more accurate understanding of the factors driving injury, dysfunction or performance limitations.

Depending on your needs and requirements the integration of VALD testing provides objective measurement of strength, power, reactive strength, force development and limb symmetry. Using industry-leading force plate and strength testing technology, we can identify meaningful deficits, asymmetries and compensatory strategies that may contribute to injury risk, reduced performance or delayed rehabilitation. For athletes and active individuals, understanding physical capacity is often as important as understanding movement mechanics, allowing rehabilitation and performance programmes to be targeted towards the factors most likely to improve resilience, efficiency and athletic performance.

A key aspect of our approach is recognising that pain and injury are rarely caused by a single factor. In many cases, symptoms develop when the demands placed upon the body exceed the capacity of the tissues to tolerate load. Factors such as training volume, recovery, movement patterns, strength deficits, footwear choices and previous injury history can all influence how stress is distributed throughout the lower limb. By combining clinical expertise with objective assessment data, we can identify the factors most likely to be contributing to symptoms and develop targeted interventions aimed at improving tissue capacity, movement efficiency and long-term injury resilience.

Where appropriate, additional technologies including 3D Gait Analysis can be incorporated to provide further insight into movement quality and tissue loading. The information gathered throughout the assessment is used to create a highly individualised management plan which may include rehabilitation and strength programming, return-to-run planning, load management strategies, footwear recommendations, custom foot orthoses or shockwave therapy. By combining clinical expertise with objective data, we are able to monitor progress, quantify improvement and ensure treatment remains focused on improving performance, reducing injury risk and supporting long-term musculoskeletal health.

  • Detailed assessment of joint mobility, muscle strength, movement patterns and loading strategies to identify the mechanical and functional contributors to pain or injury.
  • Individualised management plans tailored to your symptoms, activity levels and goals, which may include rehabilitation, footwear advice, load management and return-to-sport guidance.
  • Integration of objective testing and biomechanical assessment to provide a clearer understanding of how movement, strength and tissue capacity influence injury and injury risk.
  • Support for both acute and long-standing lower-limb conditions, helping improve movement efficiency, reduce recurrent injuries and build long-term resilience for sport, exercise and everyday activity.
  • Ongoing monitoring and progression using measurable outcomes to track recovery, optimise performance and ensure a safe and effective return to training, competition or daily activity.
  • Evidence-informed recommendations that integrate clinical findings, biomechanics and performance data to help optimise movement efficiency, reduce tissue stress and enhance long-term physical performance.

Benefits of Sport and msk Podiatry

Accurate Diagnosis and Data Driven Decision Making

Accurate Diagnosis and Data Driven Decision Making

Accurate Diagnosis and Data Driven Decision Making

By combining clinical assessment with objective testing such as Footscan Plantar Pressure Analysis, VALD Strength Testing and VALD HumanTrak, this approach identifies the true driver of injury while removing guesswork from decision-making. It allows us to link symptoms to underlying mechanics, strength deficits and load tolerance, ensuring treatment is precise, measurable and targeted at the root cause rather than just symptom relief.

Improve Performance and Reduce Injury Risk

Accurate Diagnosis and Data Driven Decision Making

Accurate Diagnosis and Data Driven Decision Making

Understanding how your body produces and controls force allows for highly targeted interventions that improve efficiency and resilience. By identifying deficits in strength, reactive capacity and movement control, we can enhance performance while reducing compensatory strategies that increase injury risk. This leads to better movement efficiency, improved output and greater long-term robustness under sport-specific demands.

Sports Specific Benefits (Running, Athletics and Football)

For endurance runners, this approach improves running economy and load tolerance, helping manage high training volumes and reduce overuse injuries. In athletics, it identifies limitations in explosive strength, stiffness and coordination that directly influence speed and power. For football, it highlights deficits in deceleration, change of direction and limb symmetry, key factors linked to both performance and common injury mechanisms. The result is a more efficient, resilient athlete tailored to the specific demands of their sport.

Supports Longevity and Function in Older Adults

Sports Specific Benefits (Running, Athletics and Football)

Sports Specific Benefits (Running, Athletics and Football)

For older adults, the focus shifts towards maintaining strength, balance and movement control to support long-term function and independence. Objective assessment helps identify early declines in force production, stability and coordination, allowing for targeted intervention to reduce fall risk, improve mobility and maintain an active lifestyle. This ensures not just injury management, but sustained physical capability over time.

FAQs

Do I need to be an athlete?
No. We help anyone who wants to recover from injury, move without pain and perform better in daily life or sport.

Do you assess suitability for running shoes? Yes, 3D gait analysis explores shoe categories including cushioned vs stability, carbon-plated racing models, minimalist footwear, providing objective data needed to make the right choices.

How long until I recover from pain or improve performance? Pain often improves within weeks when load drivers are addressed. Performance changes depend on your starting point and adherence. We will outline milestones and re-test dates.

Can I bring previous scans or reports?
Absolutely. They help us integrate your history and focus testing where it matters.
